  • See Ya, Colossus of Rhodes… Hello, Chichen Itza’ !

    October 11, 2007

Chichen ItzaDo you know the 7 wonders of the world? How about the 7 NEW wonders? Here’s a hint: the Mall of America is not one of them. National Geographic has compiled a photographic journey to show off each set, both new and ancient, of the world’s wonders. The NEW wonders were the result of an internet and phone vote, American Idol style. It looks like Rio’s “Christ the Redeemer” is your Kelly Clarkson, Planet Earth.

Keep in mind, though, that “new” is a matter of perspective. Among the other winners were India’s Taj Mahal, The Great Wall of China, and The Colosseum of Rome. If you might be thinking “wait… those weren’t ‘wonders of the world’ already?” you’ll be able to find out what those actually were. Egypt’s Pyramids are the only remaining of the ancient wonders, and there is still speculation that the Hanging Gardens of Babylon actually even existed.

The photos here are great, and the story might inspire some class projects to see how your students opinions might differ from the voting readers of National Geographic. What would make your list? The Statue of Liberty? The Sydney Opera House? This 1000 lb. statue of Darth Vader made completely out of butter? –JEREMY S. GRIFFIN
