She Blinded Them with Science: Girls Sweep National Science Contest
December 4, 2007
Who says girls can’t do science? According to the New York Times, the results of this year’s Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology shoots that idea to pieces. For the first time, female students won both the individual and team categories. It was also the first year the final round featured more girls than boys.
A feel-good story like this ought to be inspiring to your female students who think science and math are owned by boys with glasses and bad haircuts. Add to that the fact that they could win a $100,000 scholarship, and you’ve got no excuse for suggesting they start working on projects of their own for next year. At the very least, your female students will have some good ammo the next time someone writes off their work as, “Not bad for a girl.”-BILL FERRIS
