Face the Facts with The Facebook Classroom
March 4, 2008
I considered holding off on this article for a Monday by the Numbers, but it seems too valuable to wait. This article on CollegeDegree.com is all about 25 Facebook Applications Perfect for Online Education. The site is geared toward college students, but chances are likely that your high schoolers are already hooked on Facebook. Personally, I’ve never been able to stand any sort of Facebook application other than Scrabulous, but these seem like they’re perfect for your hard working, net-savvy students. One of the greatest features that Facebook has to offer is the sheer amount of applications that can be added in order to customize the user experience, so your students might as well use them for good.
Also, with the number of teachers on Facebook as it is, it makes sense for you to sign up, too. You can get info on what other schools are up to with apps like SkoolPool, or find out what your students really think with Rate My Professor. You can also use some of these applications to create and manage content, like SlideShare or BookTag, so students won’t be able to hide in Facebook instead of doing their homework. Whether you are on Facebook or not, your students probably are or will be, so let them know about these applications so they’ll have something of substance amidst their Zombies and NBA Tournament Brackets applications. -JEREMY S.
