  • New teacher? The New Teacher Zone is for you.

    May 29, 2009

nt_header.jpgWith May comes commencement, and with commencement comes new teachers. Armed with crisp diplomas, a government-issued teaching certificate, and big plans for September, it’s always good to have some resources for that first job. Scholastic’s New Teacher Zone should be bookmarked by newly minted teachers as well as veterans.

The New Teacher Zone has many resources available, from reproducible graphic organizers to lesson planning. Of course, Scholastic is a business, so they also link to their own products as being valuable tools, or link to books that support the ideas they are writing about. But even with that, there’s a lot of good information there. Time management for new teachers includes an article to help lessen the weekend workload, and the Connect section has lesson plans, tips, and information shared from other teachers. Veteran teachers, you can contribute your own work, as well!

While you may spend the summer envisioning who will play you in the blockbuster, feel-good film of “new teacher meets and overcomes adversity to inspire a generation of children,” take a few minutes to get to know the resources at the New Teacher Zone. Anything that can make you more confident and feel more prepared in that first year of teaching is worth knowing about. And because it’s free, it fits into any new teacher’s budget. -GRETCHEN SCHAEFER
