Energize your presentations with Prezi
September 27, 2010When it comes to giving presentations, we’re all familiar with PowerPoint. It gets the job done, but it’s hard to create a great presentation without slogging through its many menus and features. Somewhere in between formatting clipart and configuring slide transitions, you may find yourself wishing for something simpler. Something like Prezi.
Prezi’s innovative approach will really catch your eye. Rather than dividing a presentation into slides, with Prezi you place everything on a single canvas. The simple controls make it easy to insert text, pictures, colors, and shapes. Then you set the “path” the presentation will follow, moving and zooming from one phrase or picture to another. You can also select no path and freely move around the canvas with your mouse.
But more than style differences distinguish it from PowerPoint, as Prezi is web-based and free to use. Everything is edited, viewed, and saved online. For situations in which you won’t have internet access, you can download presentations to show from a flash drive or desktop. Since anyone may sign up, your students can create individual accounts, though make sure to register yourself as an educator to get extra storage space and a few other perks. Once you’re there, click the “Learn” tab to watch tutorial videos or “Explore” to see examples of what Prezi can do.
The bottom line: Prezi is visually dazzling, easy to learn, and free to use on any computer. Once you show it to your students, they’ll want to create their own, and they might not want to see another PowerPoint again.
